What is a Double Chin?

A double chin, also known as submental fat or submental fullness, is a common cosmetic concern characterized by the accumulation of excess fat beneath the chin and jawline. This results in the appearance of a fold or second layer of skin, creating the impression of a “double” chin.

A double chin can be bothersome for many individuals as it can make the face appear fuller or less defined, and it may contribute to a less youthful or more aged appearance. Fortunately, there are non-surgical double chin treatment methods that can help to reduce and get rid of a double chin.

What Causes A Double Chin?

There are several factors that can contribute to the development of a double chin:

  1. Genetics: Genetics can play a significant role in determining a person’s likelihood of developing a double chin. Some people may be genetically predisposed to store excess fat in this area.
  2. Weight Gain: Excess body weight, especially when accompanied by an increase in overall body fat, can lead to the accumulation of fat under the chin.
  3. Aging: As individuals age, the skin’s elasticity naturally decreases, and the muscles in the neck and chin area may weaken, contributing to the appearance of a double chin.
  4. Posture: Poor posture can weaken the muscles of the neck and chin area, potentially making a double chin more noticeable.

Double Chin Treatment

While a double chin is often associated with excess body fat, it is possible for individuals of all body types and weights to have one. Fortunately, there are several options for double chin treatment:

  1. Diet and Exercise: Maintaining a healthy diet and engaging in regular exercise can help reduce overall body fat, which may, in turn, reduce the appearance of a double chin.
  2. Lifestyle Modifications: Improving posture and neck-strengthening exercises can help improve the appearance of the chin and neck area.
  3. Fat Freezing: If you have excess fat on your chin and you are looking for a non-invasive way to get it removed, then Fat freezing, also known as cryolipolysis is an effective double chin treatment that can help. Cryolipolysis uses temperature manipulation techniques that are proven to freeze away fat cells successfully and for good when applied correctly. During your consultation we will discuss which area you are hoping to sculpt and slim down. Each individual is different and the right treatment course and number of sessions can vary. However in most cases we recommend between 2 & 4 sessions (in the same area) to achieve the best result.
