What is Pigmentation, Sun Spots, Age Spots & Melasma?

Pigmentation, melasma, sunspots, and age spots are all related to skin pigmentation but differ in their causes, characteristics, and treatments. Fortunately, there are several Pigmentation, Sun Spots, Age Spots & Melasma treatment options to lighten and reduce the appearance of these concerns.

  1. **Pigmentation:** Pigmentation refers to the coloring of the skin, primarily due to the presence of a pigment called melanin. Melanin is produced by melanocytes, which are specialized cells in the skin. Skin pigmentation can vary naturally among individuals and can be influenced by genetics, sun exposure, hormones, and other factors. Skin pigmentation is responsible for the variation in skin tones among people.
  2. **Melasma:** Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by the development of dark, irregular patches on the skin, typically on the face, but it can also occur on other sun-exposed areas like the neck and arms. Melasma is often triggered or worsened by sun exposure and hormonal changes, such as those that occur during pregnancy or with the use of hormonal contraceptives. It is more common in women than in men. Treatment options for melasma may include topical creams, Microdermabrasion, LED Light therapy, and sun protection.
  3. **Sunspots:** Sunspots, also known as solar lentigines or liver spots, are flat, brown or black spots that appear on the skin as a result of sun exposure. They are more common in areas frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, arms, and shoulders. Sunspots are generally harmless but can be considered unsightly. They are often associated with aging and are more common in older adults. Sunspots can be treated with various methods, including topical creams, LED Light therapy, Microdermabrasion, laser therapy, and Kalana Skin Vitamin C serum.
  4. **Age Spots:** Age spots are similar to sunspots in appearance, as they are flat, brown or black spots on the skin. They are also sometimes referred to as “liver spots.” Like sunspots, age spots are linked to sun exposure and are more prevalent in older individuals. These spots can occur anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on areas frequently exposed to the sun. Age spots are typically benign but can be treated for cosmetic reasons using methods similar to those for sunspots.
